There is nothing supernatural or mystical to Dreams
Freud…"every dream will reveal itself as a psychological structure, full of significance, and one which may be assigned to a specific place in the psychic activities of the waking state".
Firstly to begin we must look at the development of our psyche/mind,
The Id (subconscious) is first and lasts up to about 5 years old, it is purely egocentric next comes the development of the superego and ego, the superego can be called the conscience, this develops with help from our parents and society, mostly parents, if our parents are damaged (psychologically) as a lot are to some degree then the superego will become to large and have a negative affect over the way we behave, as the parent transfers all their hang-ups onto the child, leading to shyness, inappropriate guilt etc. The ego or conscious reality develops in tandem with the superego, and when the ego is fully developed it seems to want nothing to do with the Id/subconscious, and does everything in it's power to control the ids selfish desires, leading to the denial of all the subconscious selfish wants/impulses this denial or closed gate system of the ego leads to the subconscious realising its desires/impulses/repressed memories in anxiety, depression, impulses and finally
DREAMS! (Possibly why dreaming is so important for those suffering form depression)
1. All dreams are Egocentric
2. All dreams are wish-fulfilment
3. Although there are common symbols in dreams our psychic developments or social development means that the symbols may represent different things to different people, e.g. A Dog may represent Desired aggression to one person and symbolise Desired power to another.
In the childhood id stage, our dreams are plainly wish-fulfilment. E.g. A little boy is refused a chocolate bar or a packet of crisps, he goes to sleep and dreams of eating the chocolate bar or packet of crisps.
